Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday was started by Jill at Breaking the Spine for bloggers and readers to get excited about upcoming books.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater:

Maggie Stiefvater rocks. If you've read her Wolves of Mercy Falls series, you understand. In her newest novel, The Raven Boys, due to head into our nearest book stores and into our hands on September 18th, "the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before." (Well, at least according to Goodreads.)

Excitement Factor: 8/10

Hidden (Firelight, #3) by Sophie Jordan

Oooohhhhh, dear. If you've read the first two in the series (Firelight can be found here), you know why the 'oooohhhhh'. If you're new to the game, let me give it to you straight: these books rock. They are the only books I have read about dragons (Well, that's a fib. I did read Eragon. The difference is: I didn't like Eragon. I tend to not count it.), and they are the only books I plan on reading in the future about dragons. The thing is, dragons can be cool . . . when you work them the right way. Sophie Jordan knows how to work them. Hidden was released into stores yesterday.

Excitement Factor: 9/10

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Reviewed by Sarah a.k.a "Dyslexicreader" for Simply Nerdy Book Reviews--

Shiver is, as Grace describes Sam’s eyes many times throughout the novel, “Beautiful and sad”. This story is very poetic with lots of wonderful imagery. Maggie Steifvater created her characters to be so relatable you really start to feel for their love. Is it weird that I want to be a wolf after reading her take of werewolves? Anyways the plot was awesome, if a little predictable at some points. It like a lot of other YA books, but it definitely has its own spin. This story allows you watch two teenagers finally evolve their love after 6 years of them longing after one another. However, like always there is something standing between them (not really a surprise). I did love the POV change between Grace and Sam, it showed all sides of the story and it doesn’t leave you hungry for the thoughts of the other main character.

Grace was a brilliant main character; I loved her independence, seeing her have to take care of herself was refreshing. (I have a lot of friends who are practically raising themselves too). Grace is one fearless chick though, she doesn’t run with the wolves but she probably could. Imagine walking out into your freezing back yard with a hunk of raw meat to ATTRACT a hungry wolf to you so you can PET IT! You know what? Come to think of it… I think she may have hit her head when she was dragged off her swing by wolves when she was a child…. Her sense of humor and bravery where great, but sometimes I prefer sarcasm and some kick ass attitude.

For Sam I can honestly say, “Drool-worthy”. Sure he is not model-perfect or god-like, but seriously who cares when he can sing?! And read poetry, and protect you in he woods, and isn’t as unmannered as to jump in your pants the first chance he gets (yes ladies, he’s the ultimate gentle man)… shall I go on? But in all seriousness, he is a very deep and poetic character. I would jump at the chance to be his friend or just part of his pack. Sam’s yellow eyes are a very unique touch but I think I prefer electric green on my shifters. All in all, he’s a different type wolf would than what I’ve seen so far. Props to Maggie for that! Her wolves are so awesome I want to beg her to become one to. Ahh . . . the simple beauty of life as a wolf.

This book, in total was a very enjoyable read, the type of book you want to read on a wonderfully rainy day so you can just soak the story in. It has a tiny bit of a slow read feeling to it, but that complemented the poetic writing and the budding relationship between Grace and Sam. A hauntingly beautiful story that sends “shivers” up your spine. I give this novel an “A-”

In My Mailbox

Okay, so I haven't actually posted one of these in forever. But I am today, so I'll tell you all of the ones that I've gotten recently and I'll give you a list of the ones I'll be posting reviews for soon. IMM was started by Kristi of the Story Siren.

For Review:

Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting: The missing dead call to Violet. They want to be found. When Violet Ambrose's morbid ability to sense the echoes of those who've been murdered leads her to the body of a young boy, she draws the attention of the FBI. She is reluctantly pulled into an investigation that will endanger more than just her secret...but her relationship and possibly her life as well. This book is the sequel to The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting, and is fantastic. I just recieved it yesterday, and am almost done, so you'll see the review up soon! It'll be hitting the shelves March 15th of next year.

Sleepwalk Society by Kendare Blake: I just started this one, and I like it so far. Violet has a very strong, recognizable voice, and I love that.

Wicked Girls by Stephanie Hemphill: Wicked Girls is a fictionalized account of the Salem witch trials based on the real historical characters, told from the perspective of three young women living in Salem in 1692—Mercy Lewis, Margaret Walcott, and Ann Putnam Jr. I really like this one so far, surprising when you consider how much I don't like books in verse.

Love Sucks by Melissa Francis: I haven't started this one yet; I've got to do a library run and pick up the first one, Bite Me.

UPCOMING REVIEWS:

*Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting
*The Forbidden Game by L.J. Smith
*The Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare
*Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult
*Linger by Maggie Stiefvater

. . . and a ton more!
